In Writers' Workshop, student spent time blogging. On blogs, students used "visible thinking routines" to write about their thinking from our read aloud, Out of My Mind, Specifically, students "stepped inside" a character and described how that character feels, thinks, etc. about the world around him or her. This strategy encourages students to infer characters' thoughts and feelings. At home, encourage your child to "step inside" a character in their book. Have them tell or write have sentences as that character.
In Social Studies, students participated in a gallery walk where they studied and built on each others' thinking regarding key economic ideas and vocabulary. The kids closely read an ABC News article that discussed the Wii vs. the PS3. Students found examples of economic ideas within this article, and articulated where they see economics in everyday life.
In Math, students took their Unit 6 Assessment. I will send home grades along with a Sign & Return by the end of next week.
As we cannot do Beaver Block because of PARCC testing throughout the building, our class has been engaging in Number Talks; i.e, specific mental math strategies that reinforce students' number sense and application.
