Our Book Characters!

Riverside was full of many characters today! See book characters from our class below!  Ask your child what other characters they saw throughout the building.

In Writers' Workshop, students learned that writers are always rereading and "tweaking" their essays to make them sound just right.  Today students learned one way to tweak their writing is to consider using more sophisticated transitional phrases.  For example,  using "As we follow the characters into the story..." rather than "In the middle of the story..."  The kids did really well with this.  Ask your child to come up with a more sophisticated way to say "In the end of the story...".

In Math Workshop, students applied their multiplication and division schema to help them identify and solve for fractions of a set.

In Readers' Workshop, students learned that when characters have a "Memory Moment" (MM) we, as readers, need to stop and consider why that MM is important.  Answers to this question help us make inferences about conflict and theme.  Encourage your child to be on the look out for MM's while they're reading at home.  If they come to a MM, ask them, "Why might this memory be important?"  Talking with kids while they're reading is not only intriguing, but also fosters comprehension and critical thinking.

In Science, students observed our root once again.  They used their senses to jot down any changes in its appearance.  Next week, we will cut the carrot open! Stay tuned for what we discover about roots and their functions!

Book Characters Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the last day of Reading Week; students can dress like their favorite book character.  See a snap shot from "Spotlight on Reading" below.

In Math Workshop, students used their math schema to make sense of decimals.  As a class, we identified place value to the right of the decimal and explored the relationship between decimals, money, and fractions.

In Writers' Workshop, students continue to publish their literary essays.  Today, students learned to "clue the reader in" when writing literary essays; using commas to include a brief description after characters' names.

In Readers' Workshop, students closely read The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss. They payed special attention to color in illustrations and dialogue to infer the changes in mood throughout the text, and grow ideas about the central message of the story.

Following our close read, students engaged in dialogue regarding environmental preservation and what they can do to help.  Specifically, students made personal goals for Earth Day (April 22) about how to help our environment.  Ask your child their goal!

Picture Day Tomorrow

Just a friendly reminder that class pictures are tomorrow.  Our class is scheduled in the morning.

Speaking of pictures... here is a snapshot of our students who participated in "Wear Your Words Wednesday"!

Today was the last day of the Mid-year PARCC Assessments for third grade.  While, testing can be very exhausting, the kids continued to work their hardest today. Everyone did a great job and should be very proud!

In Math Workshop, students used pictures and number lines to compare fractions with different denominators.  At stations, students continued to quicken their multiplication fluency, apply precise math language to complete problems about fractions, and practiced creating and drawing fractions with different numerators and denominators.

In Science, students observed our root (carrot). They jotted down changes in its physical appearance and referred back to their hypothesis to see if their thinking about roots' functions have changed.

Reading Week Schedule:
  • Thursday:  Spotlight on Reading
    • Bring a flash light to school to read with during reading.
  • Friday:  Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character

Wear Your Words Wednesday

Tomorrow is "Wear Your Words Wednesday".  Students are encouraged to wear clothing with school-appropriate words on them.

Students continued PARCC testing today.  Unless your child has been absent during testing, tomorrow is our last PARCC testing day.  If your child has been absent, our team will arrange for them to make up what they missed.

In Science, we started our first experiment in our Plants Unit of Study.  Our focus question for this experiment is: What are roots and their functions?  Yesterday, students designed an experiment to test their hypothesis about roots' functions.  Over the course of a week,  students will observe a carrot (root) in red food coloring.  Each day they will jot down observations and refer back to their hypothesis to reflect on their thinking and learning.  Stay tuned for what we discover!

In Math Workshop, students learned to use number lines or pictures to help them compare equivalent fractions.  Students Unit 6 Assessment will come home in their Beaver Folder this week.

Reading Week Schedule:
  • Wednesday: Wear Your Words
    • Students and staff are encouraged to wear clothing with school-appropriate words.
  • Thursday:  Spotlight on Reading

PARCC Continues

As a friendly reminder, PARCC continues next week!  Thank you!

Today the kids blogged during Writers' Workshop.  Ask your child what they blogged about, have them identify what kind of writing they were typing.  Ask them to tell you some target learning goals they used in their writing today.

In Readers' Workshop, students took on all the responsibility to read and write about two authors' points of view on the same subject.  Students used informational reading and writing strategies to complete this task.  I will send home a sign and return next week with your child's results.

The kids were told their grade for their Unit 6 Math Test.  Due to PARCC testing, we have not completed the back page (the fluency page) of the assessment yet.  I will send these tests home next week once we have a chance to complete the fluency portion.  Thank you for your patience during PARCC assessments.

Polar Tourism?

In Readers' Workshop, the kids read a debate regarding polar tourism.  They then used their comparing matrix to gather and record authors' points of view and supporting evidence.  Using their matrix, and with a partner, the kids wrote about the issue, comparing the different authors' points of views.  What students are writing is incredible. So proud of them! Take a look at some examples below (please excuse their orientation, I couldn't "rotate" the pictures).

As you know, the kids took the Mathematics portion of PARCC today.  This will continue into tomorrow (1-3).  Just a friendly reminder, please encourage your child (if possible) to leave their phones at home, if applicable.  Thank you for your cooperation!

In Writers' Workshop, students revised their literary essays using our past target learning goals and writing strategies to strengthen and lengthen their writing.

In Readers' Workshop, students participated in an author study on their book club books.  Ask your student who they think should be the "Author of the Year", encourage them to explain their thinking using evidence or facts they know about said author.

In Science, students used their schema to explain the importance of plants. Today begins our new Science Unit of Study: Plants: Growth and Function.
