Multiplication Facts!

The time has come for us to start practicing our multiplication facts! Students made flashcards to help them memorize and study multiples of 2.  In addition to students 20 minutes of reading, it is now expected that they spend 10 minutes practicing their flashcards.

In Math Workshop, students used "equal groups" to show and solve real world multiplication problems.  Students have homework coming home tonight (only the starred problems), due tomorrow.

In Writers' Workshop, students were in the lab for the final time, collecting research in support of their Seaworld opinion.  Tomorrow we will begin organizing our notes to help us plan for our essays.

In Read Aloud, we learned more about Ivan, and were introduced to a new character, Bob.  Ask your child what kind of animal Bob is (A: dog).  Have them tell you about his brothers and sisters (A: They died, were thrown out of a car).  Encourage your child to use a precise word to describe Bob and use evidence to support their thinking.

In Word Study, we read Sam and Dave Dig a Hole to help us understand and identify the meaning of "indecisive".  Ask you child for an example of someone who is indecisive.

In Readers' Workshop, students took a pretest for informational reading and writing. Book clubs also met.  Most clubs are finishing or have already finished.  Once clubs finish their books, they collaborate with one another to create a presentation on their learning and thinking about characters, plot, theme, etc.

Students visited Math Beaver Block today.

In Science, students applied their understanding of the 3 states of matter to identify them in the world using precise scientific language: atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere.
