Close Reading Ritual

In Math Workshop, students applied what they knew about equal groups and multiplication to show an solve multiplication word problems using a different strategy: arrays.  During stations, students practiced creating multiplication number stories and solving them using the array and equal groups method.  Students need to complete the array section on their homework tonight and study their flashcards for 10 minutes.

In Writers' Workshop, students reread their notes and considered similarities in their research and facts.  They used the similarities they noticed to group their notes which we will use later in our paragraphs.

In Word Study, students learned 3 new Tier II (vocabulary) words:  sentimental, apologetic, and ambitious.  Ask them to identify a person or character from books, TV, or movies that has one of these character traits.

In Readers' Workshop, we used a close reading routine to help us "dwell" in texts and discover new understandings about texts and life. We listened, used focused "lenses" (i.e. underlined phrases about the experience of life), identified patterns, and developed new understandings about life in the song "Blank Space", by Taylor Swift. Look how engaged in close reading they are!
