In Readers' Workshop, students learned another strategy to identify and synthesize main ideas from informational paragraphs: I can ask myself, "What is the author trying to teach me?". Tonight, when your child is reading, encourage them to read informational text (below are a few awesome links). Have them identify and synthesize (put in their own words) the main idea of each paragraph.
In Writers' Workshop, students learned how to effectively conclude each paragraph with a "touchdown sentence", i.e., a strong opinion sentences that emphasizes their point of view.
