Spirit Day Tomorrow!

As some of you may know, I am originally from Michigan (near the Metro Detroit area).  Coming to town tomorrow are my Tigers to play the Orioles.  For fun, we thought we'd have a class spirit day to celebrate both of our teams.  Orioles' fans wear Orioles clothes or black and orange.  Tigers' fans (probably just me) will wear Tigers gear or navy blue and white.  I'll be sure to post some fun pictures of our little classroom rivalry!

In Math Workshop, students used patterns to make mathematical claims about rules.  We struggled a bit with applying patterns to rules and then determining missing numbers.  Because of this, I will not be sending home homework today; I will push that until tomorrow.

In Writers' Workshop, we read like writers again to notice how authors spatially organize their ideas with paragraphs.  Students then went back in their writing to revise and edit, ensuring they have new paragraphs according to their text maps.

In Word Study, we applied our rule "every syllable must have a vowel" to spell words we may not know how to spell yet.

In Readers' Workshop, students closely dissected character motivation to precisely identify specific character traits.  When your child is reading at home tonight, have them tell you what their character's motivation is and what they're inferring about that character based on what they want. In book clubs, we use many strategies to help us comprehend, dig deeper, and critically think about text, characters, and relationships.  See the color and symbol visible thinking strategies below.

In Social Studies, students are creating in class projects to display their thinking and learning about key democratic principles such as patriotism and citizenship.

Homework:
  • Read 20 minutes
Reminders:
  • Orioles/ Tigers Spirit Day tomorrow!!
  • Clip Hall of Fame Celebration this Friday at 9:30
Classroom Supplies:
  • Sticky Notes: Sticky notes are used every day in every subject area to ensure comprehension, foster critical thinking, and display progress.  As such, we run out rather quickly.  The kids and I would so appreciate any sticky note donations.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Thank you,

Ms. Smith
