Word Study

Today in Word Study, students noticed and noted how letters were arranged in past tense words.  Students discovered that if the last three letters of a word are Consonant-Vowel-Consonant, they need to double the last letter and add -ed.  Ask them about the rule they learned; say, "If the last three are CVC..." and have them finish the sentence ("double the last letter and add -ed").  Practice at home.  Have them spell hopped, shopped, taped, shaped, etc.

In Readers' Workshop, students learned to identify precise, describing words to help them get a really cool, detailed mental movie in their minds.

In Writers' Workshop, students practiced a pre-writing strategy to help them brainstorm and decide on story ideas.  Ask them about their Buried Life Map in their writer's notebook.  Ask them how they can use this to help them get ideas started.

In Math Workshop, students identified and explained common errors when misreading analog clocks.  They used spatial reasoning to explain where the hour hand is located at certain times based on how much time has passed in that hour.  Students have homework coming home tonight, due tomorrow. Below is a snapshot from one of our stations during Math Workshop.  Ask your child how this station works and what they worked on here today (Answer: They practiced making, manipulating, and explaining rules).

In Social Studies, students engaged in a "quick write" where they compared and contrasted rules and laws. Tomorrow we will continue our dialogue on these ideas and begin examining authority figures and their purpose.
